Cavitron Tips - Cleaning and Sterilization

One question we often encounter is how to care for Dentsply Cavitron Tips. Since ultrasonic scaler tips usually come into contact with blood and saliva during the scaling process, contaminants should be removed from Cavitron tips prior to sterilization. Proper removal of these contaminants is important. Dentsply prefers that thermal disinfectors not be used to process cavitron tips, as these may cause unnecessary damage. Other pre-sterilization procedures, such as the use of ultrasonic cleaners is also discouraged, as the process can have adverse effects on insert tips. A very simple alternative to these methods would be simply rinsing under a strong water spray to remove gross debris prior to sterilization. Proper personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and protective eye wear are recommended during Cavitron tip cleaning activities. Be sure to select Cavitron tips compatible with the frequency of your unit, such as 25K and 30K.

Dental Scaler - Which Is Best?

Whether using a sonic dental scaler, ultrasonic dental scaler, or hand instrument, efficiency is very highly dependent on the skill of the operator. All will certainly do a sufficient job, given the necessary time required. Of course, where time is at a premium in the modern practice, ultrasonic dental scaler technology wins out. Time spend on each tooth and hand stress are significantly reduced using the ultrasonic dental scaler.

Both sonic, and ultrasonic dental scalers have been found to have a slight therapeutic effect on the gums, which is a plus. Newer model units typically refer to the scaling portion of the cavitron handpiece, a cavitron tip. Dentsply Cavitron Tips are of the highest quality and hold up very well to the autoclave process.

Dentsply Cavitron Inserts

Older Dentsply Dental Cavitron units are typically compatible with dentsply cavitron inserts which are a long metal component of the early model magnetostrictive units. Very little plastic is used in cavitron inserts, making them an excellent choice for the long haul. Also, very resistant to damage caused by the rigors of the autoclave cycle.

Dentsply Cavitron Parts

One thing that makes many buyers reluctant to choose a particular product is the availability of parts for repair. Dentsply Cavitron parts are readily available, making the Densply Cavitron an excellent choice for longevity. Also, many independent repair facilities exist with excellent training on the repair of Dentsply Dental Cavitron units and others. Used mainly in the United States, the magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler uses a magnetostrictive transducer to create magnetic energy which is then converted to mechanical energy at varying frequencies.

Ultrasonic Scaler - Piezo

More prominant in Europe and Asia, piezo ultrasonic scaler vibrations are produced by oscillations of a quartz crystal in the handpiece.

Both technologies are considered to be very sound, providing consistent operation over a long period of time.

Repairs are typically minor, with most involving the handpiece or tips, which are easily replaceable. One additional consideration would be that most magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler tips are interchangeable, while piezo ultrasonic scaler tips are typically specific to the manufacturer.

Pathogen Destroying Cavitation Bubbles?

Proponents of magnetostrictive scalers claim that their elliptical motion is more effective because it generates pathogen destroying cavitation bubbles 360° around the tip, while the piezo design vibrates more in a straight line creating the bubble effect only at the two ends of their back-and-forth cycle. However, the pattern of tip oscillation appears to be influenced far more by the geometry of the tip itself than by the design of scaler that powers it. For example, “S” shaped tips like left- and right-curving perio tips feature an elliptical vibration. But tips with a simple curve, like the Cavitron TFI® and Parkell Universal tip, are linear.

Independent researchers at the University of Kiel, and the Max Planck Institute reported that the vibration pattern of a magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler seemed virtually the same as that of a piezo ultrasonic scaler.
